Behavioral Health Technician (BHT)

Department: Blake Behavioral Health
Location: Tucson, AZ

General Position Description: The Behavioral Health Clinician (BHT) provides resident care as directed by the Program Supervisor in a manner that considers resident rights (R9-20-203), cultural differences, safety, cleanliness, and comfort while promoting resident dignity, independence, individuality, strengths, privacy and choice.

Essential Duties & Functions (With or Without Accommodation):

  • Comply with all EBF policies, procedures, and protocols in addition to BBHS Residential Services policies, regulatory requirements (i.e., ADHS regulations, Cenpatico requirements, and HIPAA Guidelines), and participate in performance-improvement activities.
  • Within one month of hire, participate in and successfully complete all applicable sessions of EBF/BBHS Residential Services new-employee orientation.
  • Comply with the agency’s on-going training requirements.
  • At time of hire and on an on-going basis, provide EBF/BBHS Residential Services with required documentation related to: formal education, training, and compliance with general and physical requirements.
  • When indicated in member's service plan will provide rehabilitation services that include: living skills training, cognitive rehabilitation, and supported employment services to enrolled members.
  • When indicated in member's service plan will provide support services that include: case management, personal assistance, family support, peer support, respite care, and transportation services to enrolled members.
  • Comply with the division dress code.
  • Recognize and respond to a fire, disaster, hazard and/or medical emergency when necessary.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior, as outlined in BBHS Residential Services Code of Ethics Policy (#201.11) and as directed by supervisor.
  • Interact with all levels of EBF/BBHS Residential Services staff, residents and their families, and staff from other community agencies in a professional, respectful and cooperative manner. 
  • Demonstrate dependability by reporting to work on-time and working required hours/days.                     
  • Achieve goals developed during employee performance evaluation.
  • Read and implement a resident’s treatment plan.
  • Follow established routine.
  • Supervise and facilitate daily programs/services as assigned, such as assisting with activities of daily living skills, mealtime, personal hygiene, educational and medication management, community groups, and activity therapy.
  • Use best practices to help resident gain tools to address behavior issues.
  • Provide residents with positive cues, redirection and reinforcement.
  • Provide appropriate training or skill building in communication, the development and maintenance of productive interpersonal relationships, and occupational or recreational activities intended to prepare a resident to live independently or to enhance a resident’s independence.
  • Recognize, prevent, and respond to a situation in which a resident may be a danger to self or others, behaves in an aggressive or destructive manner, may be experiencing a crisis situation, or may be experiencing a medical emergency.
  • Initiate First Aid/CPR if needed.
  • Provide safe, timely transportation of resident to and from the facility as assigned.
  • Comply with safe driving practices and procedures for getting emergency assistance in case of vehicle breakdown.
  • Encourage the health, safety, and welfare of residents at all times.
  • Assist residents in accessing community services and resources.
  • Work as a team member to provide a safe/positive work environment for residents, staff and the public.
  • Contribute at staffing’s and shift changes.
  • Follow direction of supervisor or other authority.
  • Helpful during day-to-day job duties.
  • Record and document resident information in a quality and timely manner (by 11:59pm the day of the service).
  • Protect and maintain the confidentiality of resident records and information.
  • Write legibly with attention to grammar and spelling on all written documentation.
  • Thoroughly and accurately document resident related information pertinent to clinical care.
  • Accurately score treatment plan.
  • Complete other forms/paperwork when necessary (e.g., activity calendars, Critical Incident Reports, menus, vehicle log, etc.)
  • Meet all EBF productivity targets and progress note entry requirements.
  • Assist residents with the self-administration of medications while following established protocols.
  • Monitor residents filling medication trays.
  • Provide medication education when necessary (i.e., discuss names, purposes, etc.)
  • Obtain peer review for second check of medication trays.
  • Verify number of pills and names on medication sheet before assisting resident with medication regime. 
  • Verify number of pills and names on medication sheet with residents before self-administration of medications. 
  • Initial medication sheet after resident has self-administered medications.
  • Obtain resident initials on medication sheet after resident has self-administered medications.
  •  Monthly, create new medication sheet (s) and obtain resident signature as well as signatures from all staff providing medication assistance.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the comprehensive psycho/social influences and effects of dependencies
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the natural history and clinical basis of dependence

Knowledge and Skills (with or without accommodation):

  • Ability to positively interact and develop rapport with residents and their families, professional support staff, and various levels of staff from community agencies.
  • Identify types of medications commonly prescribed for mental disorders, personality disorders, and substance abuse and the common side effects and adverse reactions of the medications.
  • Skill in using business software such as email, MS Office, smart phones, office equipment and electronic health records.
  • Able to recognize obvious symptoms of a mental disorder, personality disorder, or substance abuse.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Displays cultural sensitivity and demonstrates the ability to form constructive and collaborative working relationships with others from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate in a culturally inclusive manner and being open to other people’s differences.

Minimum Educational and Certification Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED plus two (4) years’ experience in the behavioral health field or Associate Degree plus two years in Behavioral Health related field or Bachelor Degree in Behavioral Health related field or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four years.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (licensing requirement) and able to obtain a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and the willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment (personal vehicles may not be used to transport residents).  Must meet minimum requirements of agency insurance carrier and provide a 39 month driving record from DMV is required at time of hire.
  • Must be able to meet training and agency compliance requirements for the position including but not limited to: CPR certification and Standard First Aid at time of hire or within one month of hire date (must maintain certification throughout employment)
  • At time of hire and annually thereafter, submit evidence of freedom from infectious pulmonary tuberculosis.

Other requirements:

  • Must be able to walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, sit, stand, reach, stretch, bend, squat.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to remain calm, non-defensive with a supportive attitude during stressful, potential crisis, and crisis situations.
  • Must be able to work in an extremely stressful environment where there are considerable mental and emotional demands. The types of situations that may be encountered, particularly when children and adults are involved, cause emotional stress.
  • Must be able to manage high volumes and unpredictability of work.
  • Must be able to remain flexible and re-prioritize according to the changing demands of the day.
  • Must be able to manage stress in a fast - paced, unpredictable, and high intensity setting.
  • Must be able to represent EBF in a professional manner in all situations.
  • Must be able to maintain professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Must be in compliance with all EBF and regulatory requirements.
  • Able to operate an agency transport vehicle.
  • Able to demonstrate competency in the following areas:
    • Manual dexterity to keep documentation records.
    • Able to visually and audibly monitor residents.
    • Able to perform crisis intervention techniques to prevent behavior harmful to residents or others.
    • Able to physically perform CPR and Standard First Aid.
