Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Department: Blake Behavioral Health
Location: Tucson, AZ

General Position Description:

The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing psychotherapy and medication evaluation and management to a range of clients having mental illness, mental retardation and substance abuse disorders under the supervision of consulting psychiatrist(s). The position also provides evaluation, treatment planning and discharge planning services for consumers in psychiatric facilities and those being diverted from state hospital admissions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts therapy, medication assessments, and crisis response to new and existing clients.
  • Develops individual service plans based upon assessment data, and provides therapeutic interventions as necessary including the provision of on-going medication management services.
  • Provides consultation and health education to agency staff, caregivers and clients as it is relative to the treatment and medication needs of agency consumers.
  • Provides special assessments of consumers awaiting discharge from state facilities, participates in discharge planning with other agency and facility staff, and assists in diversion of persons from state facility placements through agency residential programs.
  • Maintains documentation of services including service plans, progress notes, medication informed consent, quarterly treatment plan reviews, and other required information in compliance with agency and third-party compliance standards.
  • Receives medical supervision from psychiatric consultants consistent with applicable Protocol for Provision of Family Nurse Practitioner Services.
  • Completes other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor that are consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of: the etiology of serious mental illness, mental retardation,
  • developmental, and substance abuse disorders and their treatment by a variety of
  • appropriate therapeutic interventions including psychopharmacology; nursing practice
  • and medical evaluation, physical diseases and their treatment; community resources and
  • networking techniques; and of psychiatric and medical emergency stabilization.

Minimum Requirements: or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Education –
    • High school diploma or GED, and an accredited LPN degree.
  • Experience –
    • Must have post-degree experience of one year in the area of behavioral health and/or healthcare nursing.
    • Must be able to work in a diverse, multi-cultural environment and be sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
    • The ability to interact effectively with other team members in a team based approach to care management.
    • Must be able to work in a stressful and often high intensity environment.
  • License –
    • Must be an LPN, currently licensed in the States of Arizona.
    • Familiarity with state law on nursing care, nurse practice guidelines, and clinic policies and procedures.
  • Regulatory –
    • Minimum 21 years of age.
    • Arizona Driver’s License, 39-month Motor Vehicle Report and proof of vehicle registration and liability insurance that meets insurance requirements.
    • Must possess a valid AZ DPS Level 1 fingerprint clearance card.
    • CPR and First Aid certification (Employer provides).
    • Initial current negative TB test result (Employer provides).

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position.
  • Must be able to operate a computer, phone and other office equipment.
  • Must be able to stoop, squat, reach, stretch, ascend and descend stairs.
  • May work in an office setting.

Psychological Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain calm, non-defensive with a supportive attitude during stressful, potential crisis, and crisis situations.
  • Must be able to work in an extremely stressful environment where there are considerable mental and emotional demands. Must be able to manage high volumes and unpredictability of work.
  • Must be able to remain flexible and reprioritize according to the changing demands of the day.
  • Must be able to manage stress in a fast-paced, unpredictable, intense setting.
  • Must be able to adapt to diverse cultural environments and communicate in a culturally inclusive manner.
  • Must be able to represent Easterseals Blake Foundation in a professional manner in all situations.

Working Conditions:

Requires high level of energy to perform the daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.  Requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, and squatting.  Requires extensive typing and writing.
