Day Program Direct Support Professional (Tucson)

Department: Blake Employment & Community Living
Location: Tucson, AZ

General Position Description:

The Day Program will operate year-round on a five day a week schedule.  The Day Program Direct Support Professional will work an agreed upon schedule.  The position works with individuals in a community and program-based setting assisting them to develop a sense of identity, self-worth, and independence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support a variety of community activities and experiences providing opportunities for adults to assume and maintain valued roles and relationships.  Show innovation and insight in defining roles; develop community connections/partnerships.
  • Demonstrate self-initiative and follow through in carrying out responsibilities in setting up activities to provide maximum participation by each person.  Show creativity and flexibility in daily routines; develop new and different teaching opportunities when possible.  Be willing to adapt to changes and to take on responsibilities without direction.
  • Assist Program Coordinator and Lead Staff in writing planning document objectives for each member.  Assist in updating planning document every 3-6 months, as appropriate for each member.
  • Assist individuals with personal care and hygiene needs.  This includes assistance in the restroom, assistance with eating, and demonstrating proper carrying and lifting techniques (using one-person, two-person, and mechanical lift transfers.)
  • Keep program running efficiently and follow daily schedule and actively participate in creating daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
  • Provide transportation to members. 
  • Keep individual file on each person up-to-date.  Be sure to complete all assigned duties and paperwork accurately and on time, as requested by the Program Coordinator or Lead Staff.
  • Maintain good working relations with other agency staff, support coordinators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, colleagues of EBF, and other professional staff with the DDD.  This includes documenting and writing in daily communication logs with residential staff in a professional manner.
  • Encourage and maintain active teamwork.  Deal with problem solving in a professional, non-hostile manner.  Offer options and solutions, and give feedback in a constructive manner.  Report any concerns to Program Coordinator or Lead Staff.
  • Utilize work hours efficiently, including time to clean up work area and complete daily chores, complete paperwork, attend in-services/trainings, and prepare for the next day's activities.  Perform duties within the specified hours of the work day, unless prior permission has been given by supervisor.

Function as an enthusiastic, competent, contributing member of EBF.

  • Attend and participate in required staff meetings
  • Promote and follow practices that support health and safety of members and employees
  • Attend all necessary training within the time lines established at the time you were hired
  • Maintain agreed upon work schedule, be punctual, and use time effectively
  • Use supervision effectively, accept feedback in a professional manner, and accept responsibility for job performance
  • Communicate essential information with EBF team leads and supervisors accurately and in a timely manner
  • Understand and maintain private and sensitive information within the confines of need-to-know parameters.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to work flexible hours during day program hours, Monday through Friday.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively in English.
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and differences
  • An ability to acknowledge, respect, and build upon the diversity of person served and their families with regard to such factors as race, ethnicity, family constellation, gender, socioeconomic status, values, and traditions.
  • An ability to teach others using anticipatory guidance, modeling, coaching, reflection, and role-play 
  • Ability to complete job responsibilities autonomously without constant oversight
  • Ability to physically lift and complete transfers for members, several times throughout the workday

Minimum Requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age Experience: Any combination of training and experience needed to provide direct care services.
  • If position requires driving an EBF vehicle, must possess a current/valid Arizona Driver’s license and be insurable under the agency’s automobile policy
  • Maintain current Level One Clearance Card.
  • Maintain current CPR, First, Aid, Article IX.
  • Must successfully clear a criminal background check and a Child Protective Services/Department of Children, Youth and their Families central registry check. All newly hired employees are subject to the E-Verify Employment Eligibility Verification Program.

Physical requirements:

The position provides direct caregiving and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. The position requires the following physical requirements:

  • Must be able to walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, sit, stand, reach, stretch, bend, squat, and other physical activities.
  • Must be able to move to support individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must be able to operate a computer, wheelchair brake, vehicle lifts, etc.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
  • Must be able to communicate with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must be able to distinguish smells such as gas and other noxious fumes.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May work in outdoor weather work conditions.
  • Must be able to wear PPE, such as a face masks and disposable gloves, to provide a physical barrier to protect you and others as needed

Psychological Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain calm, non-defensive with a supportive attitude during stressful, potential crisis, and crisis situations
  • Must be able to work in an extremely stressful environment where there are considerable mental and emotional demands. Must be able to manage high volumes and unpredictability of work
  • Must be able to remain flexible and reprioritize according to the changing demands of the day
  • Must be able to manage stress in a fast-paced, unpredictable, intense setting
  • Must be able to adapt to diverse cultural environments and communicate in a culturally inclusive manner
  • Must be able to represent EBF in a professional manner in all situations
